My Favorite Word (JavaScript) Project

Use JavaScript and p5.js to bring your favorite English word to life! Produced in collaboration with Scripps National Spelling Bee®

Activity Details

Middle and high schoolers, combine your love for words with coding in this p5.js-powered linguistic journey! Choose a word that sparks your curiosity and dive into its etymology with a detailed worksheet before you start coding. Then, animate your favorite word using JavaScript and the p5.js library. Imagine "evanesce" slowly vanishing or "kaleidoscope" bursting into a spectrum of shapes and colors. Draw inspiration from our sample projects to visually and interactively tell the story of your word.

Tynker, in partnership with the Scripps National Spelling Bee®, invites you on this word adventure.

Teacher Notes

Encourage your students to harness their coding skills and linguistic prowess as they animate their chosen words into a captivating digital story. This is an opportunity for them to illustrate the beauty of language through code. Let them research, dig deep, and then code a narrative where words don't just sit on the page—they dance, they change, they play across the screen. Push them to be daring in their creativity, to build a project where every line of code weaves into a grand tapestry of visual storytelling.
