Text Snippets

  • earth is the only planet in the solar system to contain free oxygen, and life. it has the most water on its surface out of all the known planets.
  • jupiter is a gas giant, so up close the only thing you should see is the pattern of swirls that wrap around this enormous planet. in reality, jupiter is just made of... gas, hence the name.
  • mars is known as the red planet because of its surface, of which has the appearance of rust. mars' atmosphere is thin, and is mainly composed of carbon dioxide.
  • saturn is larger than all the other planets in the solar system, except for jupiter. it is 95 times the mass of earth. saturn's rings are made of ice and dust.
  • uranus is special because of its "icy" mantle that gives uranus its color, but that's not the only reason! this planet's axis is tilted, so, uranus spins on its side.
  • that dot on neptune's side is really a huge storm, much like jupiter's great red spot. uranus' tilted axis was predicted to be caused by another planet that was further from the sun. neptune is that planet.
  • pluto has been exiled out of the solar system and into the kuiper belt (bodies beyond neptune), but i included it anyway. pluto was not excluded because it was (technically) in the kuiper belt (pluto is beyond neptune), but because it was a dwarf planet.
  • venus has a heavy atmosphere that consists of poisonous clouds made of sulfuric acid. there is very little water in venus, not to mention many volcanos rising from venus' surface.
  • mercury's surface looks much like that of earth's moon. mercury is the closest planet to the sun. therefore, it is really hot there in the daytime and just the opposite at night.
  • explore all the planets in the solar system, including pluto! click on the planets to visit them. also, if you don't want to see the planet description, just tap anywhere.
