Lesson: The Basics
Time: 45+ mins

Introduction

In this lesson, campers will learn how to apply skins and resource packs in Minecraft! Campers are also introduced to Tynker's Minecraft editor where they can change the appearance of items and skins in Minecraft. By the end of this lesson, campers will have created a skin, learned how to use the editor's tools, modified the appearance of items, and customized the appearance of mobs!

New Code Blocks

  • None

Vocabulary

  • Coding: Using a computer language to tell the computer what to do
  • Skins: The texture and appearance of Minecraft characters or items

Objectives

Campers will...
  • Use Tynker's Minecraft editor
  • Customize Minecraft skins

Materials

  • Computers, laptops, or Chromebooks (1 per camper) with student account access to Tynker.com

Getting Started (5 minutes)

  • Tell campers that today's coding activities is learning how to make a skin using Tynker's Minecraft editor.
  • Ask if anyone can tell the class what a skin is. Next, ask campers to share ideas on what they use for inspiration to design their skins. For example, perhaps campers research pictures of other skins.

Activities (40+ minutes)

The lessons are intended for self-directed learning. Your role will be to facilitate as campers complete The Basics modules on their own:
1. Introduction and Skins (Tutorial)
  • Campers are introduced to Lola, a friendly helper that will guide them on how to create their first skin using Tynker's Minecraft editor!
  • Campers will observe how to create a wizard-themed robe.
  • Campers are introduced to the following editor tools:
    • Paint bucket- The paint bucket fills in colored areas
    • Pencil tool- The pencil tool fills in individual pixels and can be used to draw.
  • The tutorial shows campers how to apply a skin in Minecraft.
  • Tell campers to click (for web)/tap (for mobile) on the screen after they finish reading the captions.
2. Lola (DIY)
  • Campers will apply what they learned in the previous module and customize Lola's robe, hair color, and more.
  • Make sure campers know how to use the different editor tools. If they need a refresher, they can rewatch the previous module.
  • After campers finish customizing Lola, make sure they select the download button:

  • If campers finish early, ask them to show their creation to a neighbor.
3. Items (Tutorial)
  • Lola explains to campers that they can change the appearance of Minecraft items (for example, food and weapons).
  • Campers will observe how to create a rainbow pickaxe.
  • Campers are introduced to the following editor tools:
    • Color fills menu- This menu allows the user to make the colors look normal, colorized, scattered, or gradient.
  • The tutorial shows campers how to apply a resource pack in Minecraft.
4. Rainbow Sword (DIY)
  • Campers will apply what they learned in the previous module and customize their first resource pack item: a diamond sword.
  • Encourage campers to use the colors fill menu.
  • If campers finish early, ask them to show their design to a friend.
  • After campers finish, make sure they select the download button.
5. Blocks (Tutorial)
  • Campers will observe how to customize a bookshelf.
  • Campers are introduced to the following fills:
    • Gradient fill- The gradient fill creates a smooth color transition between two colors.
    • Scatter fill- The scatter fill randomly selects colors similar to the color selected by the user.
6. Magic Bookshelf (DIY)
  • Campers will apply what they learned in the previous module to create a magic bookshelf.
  • Encourage campers to use the gradient and scatter fills.
  • After campers finish, make sure they select the download button.
7. Mobs (Tutorial)
  • Campers will observe how to edit their first mob. Unlike the previous activities, campers can further edit mobs by adding and removing cubes.
  • Campers are introduced to the following editor tools:
    • Clone tool- To clone a cube, campers can select the green cloning cube.
    • Size tool- The size tool allows campers to increase and decrease the size of cubes.
8. Jackalope (DIY)
  • Campers will apply what they learned in the previous module to customize a jackalope.
  • To access the clone and size tools, campers need to click the cube at the top of the screen:

  • Encourage campers to use different color fills and clone more cubes to create unique antlers for the jackalope.
  • After campers finish, make sure they select the download button.

Wrap Up

Unplugged Activity: Discussion
Review today’s coding adventure by leading a discussion. Ask campers:
  • What was your favorite part about learning how to create a skin?
  • What did you find challenging?
  • Did anyone further customize the jackalope's appearance (besides giving it antlers)?

Class Presentations

These student-facing slide presentations help educators seamlessly run Tynker lessons in a virtual or physical classroom setting. Each lesson has its own set of slides that introduce the big ideas, suggest unplugged activities, and include a section for each activity module. While running lesson slides, you can switch back and forth between the activity, the slides, answer keys and other lesson materials.
