Featured Maker: Roslyn Wants To Be an Artist!

Meet our newest Featured Maker, 1st grader Roslyn from Oregon! She wants to be an artist when she grows up. She loves to draw rainbows and people and likes Vincent Van Gogh. Her favorite subject in school is math because she likes all the numbers. Roslyn spoke with us about her experience coding with Tynker:

How did you get introduced to Tynker?

I saw it on the app store, and I’ve been coding for about two years!

How did you learn how to use Tynker?

I have looked at other people’s stuff and then I have to figure out how to do it.

Have your coding skills improved since you started using Tynker?

A lot! I took screenshots to figure out what worked and what didn’t work!

How did you feel when you found out your project had been featured?

I felt really excited. Me and my sister saw the badge and I’m like, what does that mean? Then she told me and I got really excited!

What’s your favorite project you’ve made so far?

Ice Cream Maker because I like that you can make ice cream and I love ice cream!

Where did you get the idea for your project?

I saw another project like it, so I decided to make an ice cream one! It took me about 3 days.

How do you get inspiration for your projects?

I get inspiration from what I think about in my head and from the things that I look at!

Why do you like to code?

Because you get to draw stuff and then you can type in it, then you can move it and then you have your own projects!

What’s your favorite way to use code?

When Actor Touches!

What do you do with a project when you’re done with it?

I’ll just complete it and then show my sister, my mom, and my dad. And then I publish it!

What are you planning to make next?

Maybe a cupcake maker or a smoothie maker!

What’s the best thing about Tynker?

Tynker is great because I can see other people’s projects and I can get creative!

Is there anything we should change or add to Tynker?

No, actually, I think it’s pretty great!

Has learning to code prepared you for the future?

It has helped me a lot!

Do you think other kids should try coding?

Yes, because then they can make projects and show other people, and then they can get better at it!

What advice would you give to kids starting with Tynker?

You can use different shapes and code blocks. You can do anything with code!

Do you have any questions for Tynker?

No, I don’t think so. Tynker is great!

Bonus: What’s a fun fact about you?

I like to discover things on my own, like on Tynker, and then create awesome projects from what I discover!

Roslyn’s mother, Tabitha, talked with us about her daughter coding with Tynker:

Well, I’m super proud of both my daughters. She has an older sister that was introduced to Tynker first and watching her sister play on her iPad, especially during this pandemic, has really brought them both together and this bonding thing so I’m very proud. I think it really does prepare her for a future in technology. And so I’m super excited about it.

How do you support her coding endeavors?

I think coding is 100% important, and I support it. Absolutely. And how I think it supports her future is like I said, we’re only moving forward with technology and coding, and it can only prepare her for many endeavors in her future, be it anything, especially being an artist, being a graphic artist, or anything, especially like you’re saying with animation. It’s only going to prepare her for the steps to move forward.

What benefits do you think coding has for Roslyn?

Well, the benefit that I think coding helps her learn is self-worth. Actually, she feels accomplished making something after she’s done with it. She gets to see a project that she’s made, and she’s accomplished it regardless of how many likes or views that it gets. She has something that she’s made on her own. And I think that’s something that’s very important.

Do you feel that she’s better prepared for the future?

Absolutely, yes I think coding does prepare in many different avenues of your career.

Thank you!

We want to thank Roslyn and her mother for taking the time to speak with us about coding with Tynker. We can’t wait to see what Roslyn creates next – HAPPY CODING!
