Tynker – Coding for Kids: Amelia Wants To Be a Children’s Author!

Meet our newest Featured Maker, 5th grader Amelia from Dublin, Ireland! Her favorite subject in school is English because she loves writing stories—and she’s good at spelling. So it’s no surprise that when she grows up, she wants to be a children’s author. Cool! Amelia recently spoke with us about her experience with Tynker.

How did you get introduced to Tynker coding for kids?

I got introduced to Tynker when I was looking for a coding website and have been coding for two years.

How did you learn how to use Tynker coding for kids?

I first learned how to use Tynker by looking at other people’s projects.

What’s your favorite Tynker course?

My favorite course is Mythicraft.

Have your coding skills improved since you started using Tynker?

A lot. Before I started using Tynker I didn’t even know how to code!

How did you feel when you found out your project had been featured?

I was surprised and very happy.

What’s the favorite project you’ve made so far?

My favorite project is probably Talk To Me! I like the way that I ask questions about you and respond with an answer.

How do you get inspiration for your projects?

I like to look at the Tynker community to get inspiration and then change a project to make it my own.

Why do you like to code?

I like to code because I love video games, and so I make projects for people to enjoy.

What’s your favorite way to use code?

My favorite way to use code is with interactive games.

What do you do with a project when you’re done with it?

Usually, I show my project to my parents once I’m done.

What’s the best thing about Tynker?

There are so many things that are good about Tynker, but I would say I love that you can express that you like a project.

Do you think learning to code has prepared you for the future?

I think coding has prepared me for future jobs that I might have.

Do you think other kids should try coding?

Definitely. Coding could become their hobby or skill.

What advice would you give to kids starting with Tynker?

Never give up. Even if your project isn’t working, keep going. Your project will be fixed eventually. 

What are some of your hobbies?

I love to play video games and swim.

Amelia’s father, Garnet, spoke with us about his daughter learning to code with Tynker:

I think it’s great that she has taken an interest in coding. Amelia is very creative, and Tynker has been a great tool to allow her to learn at her own pace and create interesting projects.

What benefits do you think coding has for her?

I know that Amelia spends time looking at other people’s projects, which gives her inspiration to create her own. This has shown her an important skill of how to learn independently. She has also developed the skills of creative story writing as well as interactive content to engage users.

Do you feel that Amelia is better prepared for the future?

Coding is a skill for life, and along with these skills, she’s gained confidence in herself by creating these projects.

How do you support her coding endeavors?

We encourage her to create projects by using positive reinforcement and making it a fun thing for her to do.
