A collection of fun programming projects that demonstrate the application of coding to topics in grammar, storytelling, reading, and writing.

Description

Once your students have completed at least five lessons of Programming 101 or equivalent coding experience, you can assign these CCSS-aligned projects to complement your teaching on topics in grammar, storytelling, reading, and writing. For example, if you’re teaching a lesson on parts of speech, you can assign the Parts of Speech Sorting project. Your students will use coding to create a fun game where the player needs to sort words into bins based on their part of speech.

With this collection of English projects, you can easily integrate coding and project-based learning into your curriculum. Each STEM lesson walks students through how to make a project about something they’re learning in school with step-by-step instructions. At each step, it encourages them to make their project unique and interesting, emphasizing that coding is a creative medium much like writing or drawing.

Lesson Summary

Create a project that demonstrates your knowledge of fewer and less.
Introduction
In this lesson, students will identify when to use the word "fewer" or "less" in a sentence, then create a quiz game where the player needs to identify when to use the words "fewer" or "less" in a given sentence. Coding activities include changing the background, throwing a snowball Actor, programming a penguin Actor to switch costumes when it touches a snowball Actor, and using “say” blocks to say answers. If students finish early, encourage them to continue customizing their project by adding more questions, changing the Actors, or creating a desert-themed project.

After completing the DIY module, students will be asked 5 quiz questions about when to use the word “fewer” or “less” in a sentence. By the end of the lesson, students will have experimented with coding concepts (e.g., events, motion, visibility, costume handling, loops) while reinforcing proper grammar.
