A collection of fun programming projects that demonstrate the application of coding to topics in geology, meteorology, oceanography, and astronomy.

Description

Once your students have completed at least five lessons of Programming 101 or equivalent coding experience, you can assign these NGSS-aligned projects to complement your teaching on topics in geology, meteorology, oceanography, and astronomy. For example, if you’re teaching a lesson on the structure of the Earth, you can assign the Earth’s Composition project. Your students will use coding and outside research to create an interactive diagram about the layers of the Earth.

With this collection of earth science projects, you can easily integrate coding and project-based learning into your curriculum. Each STEM lesson walks students through how to make a project about something they’re learning in school with step-by-step instructions. At each step, it encourages them to make their project unique and interesting, emphasizing that coding is a creative medium much like writing or drawing.

Lesson Summary

Create a project that demonstrates your knowledge of the phases of the moon.
Introduction
In this lesson, students will explore an interactive project to learn about the different phases of the moon relative to the sun. Next, students will follow a step-by-step tutorial in the DIY (do-it-yourself) module to create their own version of the project they just explored! Activities include changing the background; programming Earth to move; labeling the name for the moon’s phase; and adding images to display what the moon looks like during a given phase. If students are struggling with “Step 4: Change the Label,” tell them to use the moon Actor’s code as a reference for specific coordinates.

After completing the DIY module, students will be asked 5 multiple-choice quiz questions about the different phases of the moon. By the end of the lesson, students will have experimented with coding concepts (e.g., simple events, conditional loops, advanced motion, detecting conditions, basic math, advanced costume handling) while creating an interactive project that demonstrates the different phases of the moon!
