Nicholas Codes For His Future!

Nicholas is from West Virginia and is ten years old! Outside of school he likes to play Minecraft, play video games, and swim. His favorite subject in school is math, and he wants to be a coder when he grows up! We were excited to sit down with Nicholas and talk to him about why he loves to code!

How did you get introduced to Tynker and how long have you been coding? I started in the beginning of 5th grade with my friend at school. He was coding and I liked what he was trying to make. I got on the school iPad, started a new project, and he helped me put the code together. Ever since he helped me I’ve been able to just do it. We give each other ideas!

How did you learn how to use Tynker when you were first starting out? Well, I didn’t really do the tutorials in the 4th grade, I just played some of the courses. The 5th grade is when I started learning. Once my friend taught me, I just gradually got better.

What is your favorite project you’ve made so far?  On my school iPad, I like Stick Man Adventures. You can start out a level and then go to a different level and the boss has music!

“Stick Man Adventures”

Where did you get the idea for your favorite project? On my home iPad, I found a Stick Man Adventures by someone named Matthew, and I liked it, but I changed it up because he didn’t want someone to do the same thing. I made it Mario-themed. It took me about a month to make.

How do you get inspiration for your projects? The community board and Mario!

“Super Mario 1”

Why do you like to code? It’s fun to test it after you make it to see if it works properly and add some things and just get to play through it!

Do you have a favorite code block? Probably the one I use the most is “when I receive.”

What are you planning to make next? Right now, on my school iPad I’m working on a game called “The Crystal Attack,” and on my home iPad i’m creating one called “Super Stick World.”

What’s the best thing about Tynker? That you can make your own projects and the thing is that you get a whole different list of options. You have all different kinds of codes and variables, and you can create functions and stuff. It’s just really fun!

How do you think learning to code has prepared you for the future? I want to code when I grow up and Tynker helps me learn it. Once I grow up I’ll have some experience!

We spoke with Robin, Nicholas’ mom, and she explained to us how she feels about Nicholas learning how to code. “It makes me really proud! He loves math, he loves coding, he loves gaming and putting it all together. I think that we all know that technology is the future. Coding has become such a big part of life, and I really think it’s setting him ahead for the future, college and a job. It also fosters his creativity, so it’s not just that technology aspect. A lot of these kids are losing their creativity skills because we’re relying so much on technology, and I think Tynker helps him incorporate those two things together!”

Nicholas wants to be a coder when he grows up and we know that he is going to create some amazing video games. In the meantime, we can’t wait! Happy coding!
