Isaac Jots Down Ideas for Projects

Meet Isaac, a 7th grader from Ohio! He’s only been using Tynker for a couple months but has already had a project featured. When he found out his project had been featured, he “felt really excited and happy!”

He just turned eleven and enjoys drawing, playing with his LEGOs, and developing his coding skills! He told us he usually uses a pencil as he’s planning his projects, but he likes to fill in his work with a colored pencil or marker.

Isaac might not have a lot of coding experience yet, but he’s learning quickly and excelling – in fact, he even had another project featured after his interview! We had fun getting to know Isaac and learning all about why he loves to code!

What do you want to be when you grow up? I think maybe a marine biologist.

What’s your favorite subject in school? Science!

Why do you like to code? It’s fun and I get to play games that I make!

How do you get inspiration for your projects? Some of my ideas I just think of and other ones are from video games I’ve played. I write down my ideas and then code it!

What do you do with a project when you’re done with it? When I finish it I show it to either one of my friends or my mom or dad. They might tell me if something could be better in the game, then I try to code it up!

What do you do when you can’t figure out how to do something? I look at other people’s projects in their code to see what they did.

How did you get introduced to Tynker? My dad downloaded it, and I started playing it. I liked it, so I got an account and started coding.

Fred’s First Battle

How did you learn how to use Tynker? I started out by doing Dragon Spells and the other courses.

What’s your favorite feature in Tynker? My favorite thing is probably that you can make your own actors!

Do you think other kids should try coding? Yeah! It’s fun and it’s a way to get away from school and other stuff.

What advice would you give to kids starting out with Tynker? I wish I knew what all the blocks meant and did before I started.

Isaac’s dad Charles is a software engineer himself, and he has been encouraging Isaac to code for years! “When he was 8 I tried to get him into Swift programs because he loves games, but it was a little over his head. I saw Tynker and thought I’d give it a try! At this time, it’s starting to click with him.” For Charles, learning to code has lots of benefits. “The analytical processing that actions have – what happens if ‘this’ occurs. You get that immediate feedback. Obviously, he’s really big into science, so anything that can be added to that is good.”

Charles sounded proud as he told us, “[Coding] is something that he likes to do, so he likes sitting there and doing it – he’s not playing video games! He could spend just hours coding – he sets his heart to it when he gets into it.”
