Over and over again, we heard the same concern: My children spend so much time staring at screens. How do I make their screentime more creative and productive? For these parents, this was one of the many problems that Tynker addressed. Here\u2019s what they see as the benefits of coding for their children:<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Coding_strengthens_logical_and_organizational_skills\"><\/span>1. Coding strengthens logical and organizational skills<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;One of the things [Benji] was having a problem with was math, so having to do the math involved in making a game and adding a score, multiplying for points, and different things like that, I think it\u2019s helped him a lot.&#8221;<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #808080;\">\u2014<em>Thomas, father of 11-year-old <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1VICupb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Benji<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Building_creative_games_builds_confidence\"><\/span>2. She always gets really excited when she completes a project.&#8221;<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #808080;\">\u2014<em>Nicole, mother of 11-year-old <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/22mC0WB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lindsay<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Coding_is_a_creative_outlet\"><\/span>3. Coding is a creative outlet<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;[Coding is] the language of creativity. [My kids] actually don\u2019t have a lot of screen time, and the only time we allow them to have screen time is if they\u2019re doing something creative. They\u2019re very driven to not just watch things, but do something creative.&#8221;<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #808080;\">\u2014<em>Emily, mother of 4th grader <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2aeOGOb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Julian<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;He\u2019s been so creative from an early age and mixing in some programming and coding seems to be right up his alley!&#8221;<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #808080;\">\u2014<em>Mandy, mother of 5th grader <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/25mCgKF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hayden<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Exposure_to_coding_can_break_down_barriers\"><\/span>4. Exposure to coding can break down barriers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;I don\u2019t want [my three daughters] to be constrained by this being a male-dominated field. They\u2019ve got a lot of aptitude in science and technology, so I\u2019m trying to give them exposure to that, see if they\u2019ve got passion for it or not. Not force them to go down that route or anything, but give them exposure to different options and lots of choices.&#8221;<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #808080;\">\u2014<em>Steve, father of 12-year-old <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2aLF1i6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kareyn<\/a> and 11-year-old <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2aLElJG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Katrina<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Coding_allows_kids_to_become_makers_of_technology_instead_of_consumers\"><\/span>5. Coding allows kids to become makers of technology instead of consumers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;I love [seeing Brenda\u2019s projects] because she\u2019s not just playing somebody else\u2019s game. She gets to create with her own imagination, so it\u2019s really good.&#8221;<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #808080;\">\u2014<em>Misty, mother of 9-year-old <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1rdsS9i\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brenda<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;[My husband and I are]\u00a0very anti-screen time, so we\u00a0don\u2019t like the kids just watching TV, but this kind of activity is something [Max]\u00a0can do where he\u2019s actually being productive, so I think it\u2019s great. There\u2019s a difference between passively just absorbing something and then actively engaging with it. Why don\u2019t you try to learn something that you can use later on? Why don\u2019t you try to make a program?&#8217; I asked him, &#8216;What do you want to be?&#8217; and he said, &#8216;I want to be an engineer.&#8217; So I said, &#8216;You need to know what you need to do to be an engineer.'&#8221;<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #808080;\">\u2014<em>Marcos, father of 10-year-old <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1rqUwji\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Christopher<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7_Coding_is_a_great_boredom_buster\"><\/span>7. When [Dea] says, \u2018I\u2019m in Tynker,\u2019 I know I feel safe.
