She\u2019s an amazing girl from Colorado who\u2019s already making a difference in this world and a great choice to be featured in Tynker\u2019s Women in STEM series for the month of March.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5916772\/kid-of-the-year-2020\/\">Time<\/a> honored Gitanjali for \u201cusing technology to tackle issues ranging from contaminated drinking water to opioid addiction and cyberbullying.\u201d In her Time interview, Gitanjali talked about her process:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong><em>\u201cObserve, brainstorm, research, build and communicate.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.tynker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/20210308121832\/Times-Kid-of-the-Year-Tynker-STEM-1024x787.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23162\" width=\"408\" height=\"312\" srcset=\"https:\/\/images.tynker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/20210308121832\/Times-Kid-of-the-Year-Tynker-STEM-150x115.jpg 150w, https:\/\/images.tynker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/20210308121832\/Times-Kid-of-the-Year-Tynker-STEM-768x590.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 408px) 100vw, 408px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Contaminated Drinking Water<\/strong><br><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Gitanjali first gained recognition back in 2017 when she was just eleven by taking action to help solve the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thetwo-way\/2017\/10\/20\/559071028\/troubled-by-flint-water-crisis-11-year-old-girl-invents-lead-detecting-device\">water crisis<\/a> in Flint, Michigan. Finding current methods of recognizing lead in water slow and unreliable, Gitanjali sought to make an inexpensive and portable lead-detecting device. She told ABC News:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong><em>&#8220;I was appalled by the number of people affected by lead contamination in water.&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After reading about new technologies that can detect hazardous substances on <a href=\"https:\/\/dmse.mit.edu\/\">MIT&#8217;s Materials Science and Engineering website<\/a>, she developed a way to use carbon nanotubes to send water quality information via Bluetooth. She calls her device Tethys, named after the Greek goddess of fresh water.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Education<\/strong><br><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Gitanjali attends a public charter school called STEM School Highlands Ranch. The campus has three engineering labs, four computer labs, and a chemistry lab. In college, she plans to study cell biology, genetic engineering, and computational genomics.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This month, her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Young-Innovators-Guide-STEM-Educators\/dp\/1642938009\/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&amp;qid=1614286092&amp;refinements=p_27%3AGitanjali+Rao&amp;s=books&amp;sr=1-1\">new book<\/a>, <em>A Young Innovator&#8217;s Guide to STEM: 5 Steps To Problem Solving For Students, Educators, and Parents<\/em>, is being released. It proposes to identify problems and develop solutions by building on the latest developments in science and taking an alternate path to innovation.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What She\u2019s Up To Now<\/strong><br><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Lately, Gitanjali has been working on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/12\/03\/942034617\/time-names-its-kid-of-the-year-water-testing-scientist-gitanjali-rao\">developing<\/a> a phone and web tool called <a href=\"https:\/\/kindly.godaddysites.com\/\">Kindly<\/a>, which uses artificial intelligence technology to detect possible cyberbullying. She started by hard-coding words that could be used in bullying but emphasized that the idea is not to punish but to educate and make kids feel safe:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong><em>\u201cYou type in a word or phrase, and it\u2019s able to pick it up if it\u2019s bullying, and it gives you the option to edit it or send it the way it is.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She\u2019s also begun running \u201cinnovation workshops,\u201d to inspire her fellow students to get involved in finding solutions to other problems by presenting lesson plans, labs, and contests. She also gives <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/search?q=Gitanjali+Rao\">Ted Talks<\/a> on topics like A Young Scientist&#8217;s Guide to Problem Solving and Innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, she\u2019s working on finding a way for people in third-world countries to identify <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2019\/01\/29\/687788715\/a-13-year-old-science-entrepreneur-wants-to-bring-her-water-testing-device-to-ma\">bio-contaminants<\/a> like parasites in their water.
