{"id":22850,"date":"2020-12-29T13:33:30","date_gmt":"2020-12-29T21:33:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tynker.com\/blog\/?p=22850"},"modified":"2023-08-06T13:05:12","modified_gmt":"2023-08-06T20:05:12","slug":"women-in-stem-andrea-ghez","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tynker.com\/blog\/women-in-stem-andrea-ghez\/","title":{"rendered":"Women in STEM: Andrea Ghez\ufeff"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Women in STEM: Andrea Ghez<\/strong><br><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This fall, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced that <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Andrea_M._Ghez\">Andrea Ghez<\/a> had become the fourth woman to win the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/\">Nobel Prize<\/a> in Physics. Along with Reinhard Genzel and Roger Penrose, she discovered a black hole <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sagittarius_A*\">in the Milky Way&#8217;s galactic center<\/a>, making Andrea a great choice to be featured in our Women in STEM series for the month of December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Astronomer<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Andrea was recognized by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/prizes\/physics\/2020\/press-release\/\">academy<\/a> for her part in the <em>discovery of a supermassive compact object at the center of our galaxy<\/em>. According to the chair of the Nobel Committee for Physics, David Haviland, \u201cThe discoveries of this year\u2019s Laureates have broken new ground.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Education<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Andrea has always been shooting for the stars, earning a Bachelor of Science in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and her PhD in Physics from the California Institute of Technology. Currently, she\u2019s a Professor of Astrophysics at UCLA, where School Chancellor Gene Block spoke of her <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ucla.edu\/releases\/andrea-ghez-wins-2020-nobel-prize-in-physics\">great achievement<\/a>:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>\u201c<\/em><em>We are inspired by her research uncovering the secrets of our universe and its potential to help us better understand the cosmos.<\/em><em>\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Research<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ghez focused her research, which she calls \u201cextreme astrophysics,\u201d on the more than 3,000 stars orbiting a supermassive black hole in the middle of our galaxy, attempting to explain how its gravity can be so dense that nothing can avoid its pull, even light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While acknowledging that Albert Einstein\u2019s general theory of relativity best describes how gravity works, Ghez says that eventually we\u2019ll need to move toward a more comprehensive theory of gravity that explains exactly what a black hole is.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon winning the Nobel Prize in Physics, Andrea was both gracious and humble:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>\u201cOur understanding of how the universe works is still so incomplete.
