In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tynker.com\/blog\/announcing-tynker-summer-code-jam-winners\/\">Week 1\u2019s winners<\/a> have already been announced and Week 2\u2019s will be announced <a href=\"https:\/\/gotyn.kr\/CJ2Winners\">LIVE on YouTube<\/a> on Wednesday, July 1st at 2:30 Eastern! We were so impressed with each of the over 4000 submissions we got for the first two weeks, that we\u2019ve really got to applaud the winners. The decisions weren\u2019t easy. You might be left wondering, though, how exactly do you win Code Jam?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each week, the Code Jam submissions are judged by a panel of experts from the Tynker Dev team, who then choose the winners. What are they looking for in a winning project? Those little small flourishes can count for a lot. \u201cI look for the small unique things that aren\u2019t in other projects,\u201d one judge told us. \u201cWhen you look at so many submissions, you start to see a lot of the same things, but one random detail that a kid will add can really make it stick out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOriginality is important, even when sticking to the theme,\u201d said another judge, \u201cThink outside the box <em>within <\/em>the theme. [In Week 1] there was a project with music notes, with a little guy dancing, that to me was very unique.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<!-- iframe plugin v.6.0 wordpress.org\/plugins\/iframe\/ -->\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"\/ide\/embedded?p=5ee7b4a5f1c17f029c5135a9&#038;controls=yes&#038;autostart=no\" height=\"350\" width=\"100%\" class=\"iframe-class\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n\n<p>The judges all agreed that whatever that week\u2019s theme may be, it\u2019s good to try to put your own unique spin on it. Create something surprising and delightful \u2013 a project that is really <em>you<\/em>, that only you would think to do. Here are some other projects that got high marks for originality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> \n<!-- iframe plugin v.6.0 wordpress.org\/plugins\/iframe\/ -->\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"\/ide\/embedded?p=5ee7f48d565dd2609e285431&#038;controls=yes&#038;autostart=no\" height=\"350\" width=\"100%\" class=\"iframe-class\"><\/iframe>\n     <br> <br> \n<!-- iframe plugin v.6.0 wordpress.org\/plugins\/iframe\/ -->\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"\/ide\/embedded?p=5ee8bb1745fd526e777fa5f0&#038;controls=yes&#038;autostart=no\" height=\"350\" width=\"100%\" class=\"iframe-class\"><\/iframe>\n     <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Creativity\"><\/span><strong>Creativity<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Tynker Summer Code Jam is&nbsp; a chance for kids to shine by showcasing their artistic, storytelling and even musical talents. That\u2019s where this next category, creativity, comes in!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone agreed, it\u2019s not always just about the code, it can be how it\u2019s drawn. That starts with building things from scratch and not just using Tynker\u2019s assets or images that you\u2019ve gathered from elsewhere. Of course, there\u2019s nothing wrong with using Tynker\u2019s assets (that\u2019s what they\u2019re there for!) but it just shows a little something special when you create the characters yourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, Week 2\u2019s challenge was to tell a story about Codey, and the judges were impressed by those coders who took the time to draw Codey themselves rather than just using the existing Codey asset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<!-- iframe plugin v.6.0 wordpress.org\/plugins\/iframe\/ -->\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"\/ide\/embedded?p=5ef4271bd8eda73d54048d3d&#038;controls=yes&#038;autostart=no\" height=\"350\" width=\"100%\" class=\"iframe-class\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen kids make projects using hand-drawn costumes and characters that fit in with the backgrounds and the other objects, that really stands out,\u201d one of the members of the Dev team told us. \u201cA lot of the hand-drawn stuff is a different style, so I get really excited when they draw it in a way where it looks like it\u2019s from Tynker.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some winners that received high marks for creativity!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> \n<!-- iframe plugin v.6.0 wordpress.org\/plugins\/iframe\/ -->\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"\/ide\/embedded?p=5ef1e1188e7e95296d14c45e&#038;controls=yes&#038;autostart=no\" height=\"350\" width=\"100%\" class=\"iframe-class\"><\/iframe>\n     <br> <br> \n<!-- iframe plugin v.6.0 wordpress.org\/plugins\/iframe\/ -->\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"\/ide\/embedded?p=5ee8d315b72c4860761d4580&#038;controls=yes&#038;autostart=no\" height=\"350\" width=\"100%\" class=\"iframe-class\"><\/iframe>\n    <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Use_of_Code\"><\/span><strong>Use of Code<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Though the grades in each of the four categories are each worth 25% of the total score, many judges felt that if any of the categories were most important, it would be the use of coding. Creativity is important, but you can create beautiful drawings using a lot of tools. Connecting the art to code is what makes it Tynker. After all, coding\u2019s what we\u2019re all about!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s cool to see creations that couldn\u2019t be done without code,\u201d one judge told us. \u201cI\u2019ve seen some really cool animations, but if I see something that also incorporates code in a way that creates something that couldn\u2019t be done otherwise? I think that\u2019s really cool!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s great that a lot of stuff is frame-based,\u201d another judge told us, \u201cBut I like to see something that they\u2019re trying to recreate in code. The moose [Week 1\u2019s top winner] was so good because they were faking joint movement using code, I thought that was cool.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<!-- iframe plugin v.6.0 wordpress.org\/plugins\/iframe\/ -->\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"\/ide\/embedded?p=5ee8e8a7679e8712354564d4&#038;controls=yes&#038;autostart=no\" height=\"350\" width=\"100%\" class=\"iframe-class\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n\n<p>The judge continued, \u201cI\u2019m also a sucker for procedural generation. I think that\u2019s a good bonus. If every time you press it that\u2019s a little different. That\u2019s kind of advanced.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some of our winners that earned high marks in use of code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> \n<!-- iframe plugin v.6.0 wordpress.org\/plugins\/iframe\/ -->\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"\/ide\/embedded?p=5ee8e6c29286641e6c2843a2&#038;controls=yes&#038;autostart=no\" height=\"350\" width=\"100%\" class=\"iframe-class\"><\/iframe>\n     <br> <br> \n<!-- iframe plugin v.6.0 wordpress.org\/plugins\/iframe\/ -->\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"\/ide\/embedded?p=5eef24fe5f08f612735b685a&#038;controls=yes&#038;autostart=no\" height=\"350\" width=\"100%\" class=\"iframe-class\"><\/iframe>\n   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Weekly_Theme\"><\/span><strong>Weekly Theme<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The last (but certainly not least) category our Tynker Dev team judges the Code Jam submissions on is adherence to the weekly theme. In fact, one of the judges stressed this mattered a lot to her. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot to be said for following the prompt,\u201d she told us. \u201cWe had a number we saw that we appreciated for complexity and ingenuity, but weren\u2019t really following the prompt, so we felt it was unfair to put them high on the list.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Creativity is great, but an important skill for kids to learn is to be able to harness their creativity in ways that fit the confines of what they\u2019re working on. \u201cWe don\u2019t want to discourage kids from doing what they want,\u201d the judge continued. \u201cBut if it\u2019s not in the line with the prompt, it might be better to save those projects for something else.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another judge agreed that a coherent theme is key. \u201cA lot are very random, which we love, but it makes it harder to judge,\u201d he said. \u201cI like to see something unique in the code which is relevant to the theme.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some projects that really impressed the judges when it came to following the theme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> \n<!-- iframe plugin v.6.0 wordpress.org\/plugins\/iframe\/ -->\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"\/ide\/embedded?p=5ee76c1ae3986569c77304eb&#038;controls=yes&#038;autostart=no\" height=\"350\" width=\"100%\" class=\"iframe-class\"><\/iframe>\n     <br> <br> \n<!-- iframe plugin v.6.0 wordpress.org\/plugins\/iframe\/ -->\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"\/ide\/embedded?p=5ee788691c6cd04d623ed99c&#038;controls=yes&#038;autostart=no\" height=\"350\" width=\"100%\" class=\"iframe-class\"><\/iframe>\n    <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, if your project wasn\u2019t chosen as a winner for Week 1, don\u2019t be discouraged! There\u2019s still six weeks to go. At the end of the day, there\u2019s no magic formula to guarantee a victory in the Tynker Summer Code Jam, but keeping the advice of the judges and the specifics of these four categories in mind can definitely work to your advantage!
