You can even create bleeps and bloops from retro games like <em>Pong<\/em>, <em>Super Mario<\/em>, and <em>Donkey Kong<\/em>.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These synth blocks are <strong><em>seriously <\/em><\/strong>cool. Let\u2019s dive in!&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>BTW. <\/em><\/strong>\ud83c\udfa7 We\u2019re gonna make some noise! Make sure you\u2019re wearing headphones or earbuds for this tutorial. You have two options:&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Option #1: <\/strong>Search for a synth command, like <strong>create synth<\/strong>, then use it in your project. Click <strong>random <\/strong>to get a random effect.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2777 <strong>Preview Your Note <\/strong>\u2014 Press a key on the keyboard to see how your synth sounds. You can reach higher or lower octaves by clicking on the \u25c0&nbsp; \u25b6 controls.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2778 <strong>Oscillator <\/strong>\u2014 Change the starting waveform to get a totally different sound \u25c0&nbsp; \u25b6.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2779 <strong>Filter <\/strong>\u2014 Change the filter effects to process the waveform \u25c0&nbsp; \u25b6.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u277a <strong>Envelope Controls<\/strong> \u2014 Play with the amplitude and filter envelopes by changing the Attack, Decay, Sustain, and Release.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you click away from this preview, your synth settings are saved. Click on the pen \ud83d\udd8a to edit it again.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hey_Whats_Up_with_All_those_Knobs\"><\/span>Hey, What\u2019s Up with All those Knobs?!<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Wondering about <strong>Attack<\/strong>, <strong>Decay<\/strong>, <strong>Sustain<\/strong>, and <strong>Release<\/strong>, and&#8230; what they mean? Staccato sounds like drums or guitar plucks have short attacks, while bowed instruments that \u201cswell\u201d have a long attack.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Decay <\/strong>describes how quickly your sound\u2019s volume drops after the attack. Staccato sounds also have a short decay.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sustain <\/strong>describes how loud your sound will be played after the decay. Unlike the other parameters, sustain isn\u2019t measured in time, but instead a percentage of the maximum volume.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, <strong>Release <\/strong>describes how fast the note stops playing entirely, after the user lets go of the key.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best way to understand the synth options is trial-and-error\u2014so play around with it! Try out these effects, then preview your notes. Explore the preset synths. Keep experimenting until you\u2019re happy. Next, you\u2019ll learn how to control your new synth using code.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Play_Synths_with_Code\"><\/span>Play Synths with Code<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You have some options for playing your new instrument. First, you can make your effect play using the <strong>synth on<\/strong> and <strong>synth off<\/strong> blocks. If you don\u2019t hear your sound play, it\u2019s likely you\u2019ve forgotten a step in this process.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also control your synth using <strong><em>beats<\/em><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>instead of just turning the synth on and off. Or want it to be unpredictable?! You can also use the <strong>load synth random <\/strong>block to get a new synth noise, at random, each time the block runs. This allows you to make some weird sounds! You could use it when your hero bumps into a bad guy.
