Zimbabwe?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In Harare, Zimbabwe, Perseverance (Percy) Ganga, founder and director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hijce.net\/\">International Institute of Junior Coders and Engineers<\/a>, O\u2019Brien Rusike, and Tinashe Mulambo want to teach kids coding concepts.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"731\" height=\"533\" class=\"wp-element-caption\">Percy Ganga<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>In a country that faces many challenges, including health, economic, ecological, and political problems, Percy sees computer science education as the path to a better future: \u201cIn Africa, technology can bring solutions to some of the problems that we have had for so many years.\u201d But finding those solutions requires Zimbabweans and other Africans to learn coding skills and problem solving skills.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As kids in Zimbabwe learn how to code, they are preparing to improve their future and their country. They don\u2019t have university degrees in computer science, but they have learned to code as adults. Tinashe told us why he feels that teaching kids to code is so valuable: \u201cThey are getting the advantage we didn\u2019t have. We are bridging the gap.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Devices like robots and drones help spark kids\u2019 interest in coding: \u201cIn Africa [drones are] still new. When you teach them how to code a drone, it\u2019s much more interesting to them,\u201d O\u2019Brien told us.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"944\" src=\"https:\/\/images.tynker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/20190913164725\/coding-for-kids-tynker-obrien-rusike.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18904\" style=\"width:179px;height:176px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/images.tynker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/20190913164725\/coding-for-kids-tynker-obrien-rusike.jpg 960w, https:\/\/images.tynker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/20190913164725\/coding-for-kids-tynker-obrien-rusike-150x148.jpg 150w, https:\/\/images.tynker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/20190913164725\/coding-for-kids-tynker-obrien-rusike-300x295.jpg 300w, https:\/\/images.tynker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/20190913164725\/coding-for-kids-tynker-obrien-rusike-768x755.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">O&#8217;Brien Rusike<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Using online courses like Tynker helps kids learn programming languages, according to O\u2019Brien: \u201cStarting with block coding, you understand the if-else statements and how to use loops. Then when you go to HTML, it\u2019s easier to do.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tinashe explained how coding teaches kids academic subjects: \u201cTynker helps kids with engineering, physics, math, animation, and science. When you are coding, you are dealing with angles.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Next_Generation_of_Technology_Creators\"><\/span><strong>The Next Generation of Technology Creators<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As kids program, Percy feels that they are not just learning programming skills, but also learning how to make coding games and become creators. He told us: \u201cInstead of kids seeing smartphones as toys that they can play with, we want them to understand that they can actually build games, just as the other kids in the U.S. are doing.\u201d&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Percy hopes that kids in Zimbabwe will use their skills with computer programs to make games about their culture: \u201cThey can build games that are specific to the African culture, to the African heroes, so they can actually code the African heroes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dylan and Christian are two elementary age students at the Institute. Christian is eight years old and wants to be a programmer when he grows up. He told us: \u201cI like to make games and design characters. I think it\u2019s important to teach children how to learn programming so when they grow up there will be many more engineers.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dylan, who is 7 and wants to be a software engineer, added: \u201cI like to create games, apps, and all sorts of things. Tynker teaches us to never give up. You have to keep trying until you get the chance to finish it.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re so glad we got to speak with Percy, Tinashe, O\u2019Brien, Dylan, and Christian about how they are using online resources like Tynker. As they learn block coding and real world, text-based programming languages, kids in Harare will be able to help Zimbabwe. As Percy puts it, if more people in Zimbabwe learn technology skills, there\u2019s a chance for a brighter future ahead: \u201cWe won\u2019t have to find solutions outside our borders.
