It doesn&#8217;t matter what you look like, what your size is, what your color is. You can be anything you want to, but you do have to work at it.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without Annie Easley, hybrid vehicles (or spaceflight as we know it) might not exist. During her 34-year career at NASA, she also worked on alternative energy, storage batteries, and was key to development of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2015\/02\/13\/annie-easley\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centaur<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a high energy booster rocket. After graduating high school as valedictorian, she began delving into STEM by studying pharmacy at Xavier University. When she married and moved to Cleveland, she discovered that the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">School of Pharmacy at the local university had been shut down \u2013 but that didn\u2019t slow her down! In 1955, shortly after arriving in Cleveland, Annie read a newspaper article about twin sisters who worked at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) as human computers, and she was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2015\/02\/13\/annie-easley\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inspired<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to apply for the same position. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As she said in a 2001 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsc.nasa.gov\/history\/oral_histories\/NASA_HQ\/Herstory\/EasleyAJ\/EasleyAJ_8-21-01.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interview<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cmath was never a problem for me. I felt fortunate that school was fun for me\u2026 I thoroughly enjoyed school.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She began the job as one of four African-Americans at the local organization. Annie was no stranger to discrimination, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsc.nasa.gov\/history\/oral_histories\/NASA_HQ\/Herstory\/EasleyAJ\/EasleyAJ_8-21-01.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cI didn&#8217;t feel like I&#8217;m a minority\u2026 I just have my own attitude. I&#8217;m here to work. You may look at me, someone else may look at me, and see something different, but that&#8217;s okay. But I&#8217;m out here to do a job and I knew I had the ability to do it, and that&#8217;s where my focus was, on getting the job done.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout her career at NASA, Annie never stopped learning. She worked full time and attended classes full time, graduating with a degree in mathematics in 1977 from Cleveland State University. As an EEO counselor at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/feature\/annie-easley-computer-scientist\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NASA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> she \u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">helped supervisors address issues of gender, race, and age.\u201d She also taught other African-Americans how to pass the required literacy test in order to vote and tutored students in her community, inspiring female and minority students to explore STEM. Annie even pioneered a wardrobe change for women at NASA when she and her room supervisor made a pact to wear pants to work. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We took the emphasis off what you&#8217;re wearing,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">she <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsc.nasa.gov\/history\/oral_histories\/NASA_HQ\/Herstory\/EasleyAJ\/EasleyAJ_8-21-01.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recalls<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cIt&#8217;s more like what you&#8217;re actually producing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How can girls and minorities break into STEM? \u201cTake any possible courses, math courses, that are being offered, at the earliest opportunity,\u201d Annie <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsc.nasa.gov\/history\/oral_histories\/NASA_HQ\/Herstory\/EasleyAJ\/EasleyAJ_8-21-01.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">advised<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. She also spoke to the importance of perseverance: \u201cDon&#8217;t give up on it. Just stick with it.
