Summer slide affects kids all over the country and the world \u2013 studies find that \u201csummer learning loss is not correlated to race, IQ or gender.\u201d<sup>2<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The literature and research around summer slide is mixed; experts estimate that kids lose anywhere from one month of general learning<sup>3<\/sup> to 2.6 months of math computational skills<sup>4<\/sup>\u00a0during the summer. It can even impact their future; \u201cby the time a student reaches middle school, they\u2019ve lost the equivalent of 2 years of learning to summer slide.\u201d<sup>5<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Summer slide may be a new term, but it\u2019s not a new concept. Research spanning 100 years shows that students \u201ctypically score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer vacation than they do on the same tests at the beginning of the summer.\u201d<sup>6<\/sup><\/span>\u00a0So what can we do to help our kids avoid summer learning loss?<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Beat_the_Summer_Slide\"><\/span><b>How to Beat the Summer Slide<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We get it \u2013 it\u2019s hard to entertain your kids during the summer, and it can be tempting to let them plop in front of the TV. Unsurprisingly, parents agree that keeping kids busy with productive activities is most difficult over the summer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But don\u2019t get discouraged! The good news is that studies suggest \u201csummer slide can be minimized or even reversed through programs that engage students, parents, and teachers while school is out.\u201d<sup>7<\/sup>\u00a0Here are three places to begin:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Establish_a_Routine\"><\/span><b>1. Establish a Routine<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it\u2019s important to allow them time to roam the neighborhood and catch up on cartoons, kids must stick to some kind of routine. Whether it\u2019s reading, math practice, or coding on Tynker, encourage your kids to stick with something daily.
