If you were gaming on an Atari in the 1980s, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">River Raid<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may sound familiar \u2013 but chances are you haven\u2019t heard of the game\u2019s designer, Carol Shaw. Carol Shaw, a microprocessor software engineer at Atari and later Activision, was one of the first female video game designers! Her career paved the way for other women and girls to study STEM and excel in engineering roles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A San Francisco Bay Area native, Carol grew up tinkering with her brothers\u2019 model railroads and excelling in math. Her interest in CS began in high school when, in math class, she used a computer for the first time to write programs with BASIC. After graduating from UC Berkeley with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and then a master\u2019s in Computer Science, she began working at Atari in 1978. Although she didn\u2019t set out to do so, this was when Carol made history by becoming one of the first female game designers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI didn\u2019t really think about it too much,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vintagecomputing.com\/index.php\/archives\/800\/vcg-interview-carol-shaw-female-video-game-pioneer-2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carol said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about her role as Atari\u2019s only female game designer at the time, \u201cbecause I\u2019d been used to not having a lot of women in my computer science classes. I mean, there were a few. In the surveying class I took, it was the second quarter that the professor had women in his class \u2013 I think he made some comment about just starting to get women in those fields.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a game designer at Atari, Carol hit the ground running. Her first project there was designing a Polo video game for release with Ralph Lauren\u2019s Polo cologne. Although ultimately Atari decided not to release the game, the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.museumofplay.org\/blog\/chegheads\/2017\/07\/preserving-carol-shaws-trailblazing-video-game-career\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Museum of Play<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> credits <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Polo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as the first documented video game designed and programmed by a woman.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12304\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12304\" class=\"wp-image-12304\" src=\"https:\/\/images.tynker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/3d_tic_screenshot_large.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"164\" srcset=\"https:\/\/images.tynker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/3d_tic_screenshot_large.png 640w, https:\/\/images.tynker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/3d_tic_screenshot_large-150x98.png 150w, https:\/\/images.tynker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/3d_tic_screenshot_large-300x197.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12304\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>3D Tic-Tac-Toe via<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vintagecomputing.com\/index.php\/archives\/800\/vcg-interview-carol-shaw-female-video-game-pioneer-2\"><em>VC&amp;G<\/em><\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carol\u2019s next project was <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3D Tic-Tac-Toe<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, released by Atari in 1978. With limited memory to work with, programming computer AI was, as Carol put it, \u201can interesting challenge.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[The Atari 2600] was a very difficult machine to program,\u201d Carol said, \u201cbecause you actually had to generate each line of the display, line by line, and count how many cycles every instruction would take\u2026 It was very difficult to program, but that also made it very flexible, so [Atari was] able to do a lot more with it than they ever thought they\u2019d be able to.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carol worked on several other games at Atari, including <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Video Checkers<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Super Breakout<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, before leaving for a company called Tandem Computers in 1980. She was at Tandem for less than two years when she was hired at Activision, where she created the game for which she\u2019s best known \u2013\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">River Raid<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12305\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12305\" class=\"wp-image-12305\" src=\"https:\/\/images.tynker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/8e878ef0c9ec06d4f89aa5b60e3e2a0d.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"188\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12305\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>River Raid via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pinterest.com\/pin\/123567583496964164\">Pinterest<\/a><\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At that time, it was not uncommon for video game designers to also code and create the graphics and sound for their games. This meant that the creation of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">River Raid<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was a one-woman job \u2013 and a tedious one at that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe graphics we would draw on graph paper,\u201d explained Carol. \u201cNobody had developed any sort of thing to do it on the computer, so you\u2019d just draw your thing on graph paper and then hand code it into the right hex values. I guess I would hand write my code [on paper] and then type it in and because we didn\u2019t have screen editors that would edit the text at that point, we just had line editors \u2013 those fairly tedious things.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The game was a huge hit for Activision. Carol went on to work on a couple other projects there, including a puzzle game called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Happy Trails<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the Intellivision, before returning to Tandem in 1984 and going into an early retirement in 1990.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to the gender gap in STEM, Carol has first-hand experience entering a field in which she\u2019s one of very few women. She credits the fact that programming is now taught in many elementary schools with helping to decrease the gender gap, but she recognizes that we have a long way to go until women are equally represented in fields like engineering.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf that\u2019s something they like doing, they should go ahead and do it,\u201d Carol says to women or girls who are interested in computer science or game design. \u201cAnd not let people tell them that they can\u2019t do it. The main thing is find something that you like doing and are interested in.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are inspired by Carol Shaw\u2019s groundbreaking work in the field of game design, as well as the precedent she\u2019s set for girls around the world.
