This Oregon Tynker Teacher Knows the Value of Computer Science

Jaime Speed is currently a Teacher and Coach at Juniper Elementary School at Bend-Lapine Schools in Bend, OR. She has been a teacher for 17 years and is passionate about learning—and sparking the excitement in others. She teaches kids and teachers how technology can break down the walls of the classroom and lead them into places that were never possible. She shares her excitement about Tynker below. You can follow her on Twitter @mrsspeed.

Juniper Elementary is a technology-focused school that has turned its focus into computer sciences. I am an early adopter—so my class jumped in with both feet. We use the teacher lesson plans and iBook lesson plans to go through the lessons together. I want my students to have the language and skill to take this into their futures.

Tynker has been transformative. My kids want to code everything. On their own, they have made quizzes with interactive images when the answer is correct. They create moving art. All of this outside of normal instruction. They are passionate and driven to code.

“Tynker has provided a step by step way for teachers to implement coding without knowing how to code themselves. That takes away a lot of the fear.”

Computer Science is a focus at my elementary school. All teachers and the librarian provide various opportunities to code. We know it is the future. Tynker has provided a step by step way for teachers to implement coding without knowing how to code themselves. That takes away a lot of the fear. Kids in all grades are excited when its time to code.
