Featured Maker: Avery’s Favorite Subject in School Is Writing!

Meet our newest Featured Maker, 4th grader Avery from Kansas City, Missouri! Her favorite subject in school is writing because she likes to write stories. Avery recently spoke with us about her experience coding with Tynker.

How did you get introduced to Tynker?

I got introduced to Tynker by my friends because they wanted to show me one of their projects, and I’ve been coding since the beginning of the school year.

How did you learn to use Tynker?

One of my friends used to Tynker a lot. They made really cool projects so they showed me how to use it.

Have your coding skills improved since you started using Tynker?

A lot. They’ve improved a lot.

How did you feel when you found out your project had been featured?

I was so happy.

What’s your favorite project you’ve made so far?

It’s probably the one that got featured because I really liked how I did that because I got the idea for my friend.

How do you get inspiration for your projects?

Well, sometimes they just come out of my head or other times I see other people doing this thing so I do it also.

Why do you like to code?

I like to code because it’s fun. I do a lot of projects. It’s just fun to do it.

Do you have a favorite code block?

I like them all because I use them all a lot.

What do you do with a project when you’re done with it?

I play it to see if it has any problems and then I publish it.

What are you planning to make next?

Since that featured project made a ton of views, I was planning on making another one bigger and better.

What’s the best thing about Tynker?

I get to see other people’s projects and work off that inspiration.

What advice would you give to kids starting out with Tynker?

To always do like a beginner project so it’s just like a few lines of code.

What are some of your hobbies?

My hobbies are playing video games and watching tv.

Do you have an idea of what you want to be when you grow up?

A YouTuber.

What kind of YouTuber would you like to be when you grow up?

A gamer.

Bonus: What’s a fun fact about you?

I have three dogs!

Parent Questions

Avery’s father, Chad, spoke with us about his daughter learning to code with Tynker:

I think it’s definitely interesting. I took some coding in college, but I didn’t necessarily understand what I was doing. So I think it’s interesting that she’s had computers since she came out of the womb basically.

They’re just going to be so much better at this stuff and understand it and be so much more fluent. I think she really understands that coding is behind everything. Like every zoom call, somebody wrote the code or every video game she plays. I think it’s cool to get introduced to that at this young age.

What benefits do you think coding has for her?

I definitely think she’s very creative, so it’s another creative outlet for her. I think it’s interesting and fascinating and want to kind of nourish that creative instinct. She actually enjoys it.

Thank you!

We want to thank Avery and her father for taking the time to speak with us about coding with Tynker. We can’t wait to see what she creates next – HAPPY CODING!
