Second grade students have been participating in the Hour of Code as part of Computer Science Education Week. They have used the activities from the Tynker website to practice their problem-solving and logical reasoning skills.

I introduced the concept of coding by first showing part of the BrainPop movie “Computer Programming: One Step at a Time.” (The movie gets a little advanced for second graders, so I stopped it once the basic concepts were covered.) After that, I piqued their interest a little more by requiring my students to use commands such as “move forward” and “jump” to navigate me around various obstacles in my room. They all wanted the chance to be “navigated” and were kind of bummed when I told them no. (They soon changed their tune when they learned what they would be doing instead!)
